What is the goal of Dean Tech, a GRAD Academy?

Dean Tech, a GRAD Academy,  is a free open enrollment public school. The goal of Dean Tech is to prepare students for post‐secondary success by implementing the proven college and career readiness strategies of Project GRAD USA which, since the early 1990s, have been executed in more than 40 high schools and prepared more than 16,000 students in high needs areas to graduate from high school within four years and enter college and the workforce ready to succeed.

The New Tech Network model, which provides GRAD Academy with a platform for a project based learning high school, was first developed in California in 1999 and has since grown to over 100 high schools internationally. Data show that when the model is implemented with integrity, New Tech Students

  • graduate high school at a rate 6% greater than the national average
  • annual graduation rate of 95% for aggregated high school class
  • four-year cohort graduation rate of 85%
  • enroll in college at a rate 9% greater than the national average
  • persist in 4-year colleges at a rate 17% greater than the national average and in 2-year colleges at a rate 46% greater than the national average

What is the school dress code?

At Dean Tech, students are required to wear black polo-style long or short sleeved shirts tucked into khaki or Dickies-style tan pants. Clothing must fit appropriately, and be worn in both academic and career technical classrooms.

What is enrollment at Dean Tech?

The enrollment at Dean Tech varies year to year between 500-600 students.

How do I know if I am eligible to be recruited?

Dean Tech is an open enrollment public high school. Any eighth, ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade student who is a resident of Holyoke is eligible to apply for fall admission to Dean Tech. Students who are not residents of Holyoke are also eligible to apply for fall admission to Dean Tech, but will be given preference after Holyoke residents.

What is the theme of Dean Tech?

Like all GRAD Academies, Dean Tech is designed on a computer‐integrated, project‐based learning model, with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curricular focus, complemented by an aggressive focus on closing skill and achievement gaps, especially in literacy and mathematics. Students work in teams and focus on real-world problems.

How does Dean Tech focus on technology?

In line with New Tech Network criteria, Dean Tech is working towards a 1:1 student to networked computer ratio in all classrooms. Student direction and feedback are given through online learning systems, as well as online enrichment activities. All students develop full ease with current technology, and teacher have full access to real-time data to help guide instruction.

What is students transportation like?

Bus transportation will be similar to HPS guidelines.

Meal Service

Dean Tech will provide healthy meals and snacks for students.
